Bounty of the Sea
Saturday 30th January 2027 | Newhaven
Now in its fourth year, Harbour Lights has become a highlight of Newhaven's calendar. This vibrant community arts event celebrates our town and harbour, lighting up the streets with handmade lanterns, rhythmic drumming and joyful singing.
This year's theme is Bounty of the Sea. We invite you to celebrate everything the sea gives us and the treasures it holds, from shimmering fish and glittering shells to the livelihoods, food and wonder it brings to our town.
Everyone is welcome. Whether you make a lantern, join the drumming, sing along or simply watch the procession go by, there is a place for you.
Join a workshop
In the weeks leading up to the procession, HYC will run a series of participatory workshops open to all residents. They welcome all ages, from young children with their parents and carers to pensioners.
Lantern-making: Led by a local artist, these sessions invite children and adults to make their own willow-and-tissue lanterns, building artistic skills and working together.
Percussion: Anyone over 11 can join a workshop led by an ex-Stomp drummer, creating the rhythms that will drive the parade.
Sea shanty singing: Learn the sea shanty composed by local musicians, which we will sing together with community groups on the night.
Workshops can be booked online for just £3 booking fee. We'll be going on sale soon - watch this space!
The procession
The celebration culminates in an evening procession through the heart of Newhaven, passing through the town centre and harbour area. Handmade lanterns, pounding drums and voices raised in song will illuminate the streets in a magical display created by the community, for the community.
Come and be part of it, as a maker, musician, singer or spectator.
